Reflection Week 2: Rhetorics of Fantasy

This week in class we had a really interesting discussion about the different tropes that typically dictate a work of fantasy. Another thing we discussed was the relationship between the reader and the author of a fantasy work; this is because to some degree, we as readers must suspend our beliefs so that the world we are reading about/watching fully immerses us. One example of the four categories of fantasy we discussed is the "intrusion" fantasy, where the fantastic intrudes on the fictional world of the work. One of the first examples of this to pop in my head was the movie Little Shop of Horrors, where a man-eating plant named Audrey II takes over the world by promising people whatever they desire for feeding it humans.

I think it is really interesting how a lot of fantasy works that fall under this specific trope are horror; movies like Alien, Gremlins, War of the Worlds, and King Kong immediately come to mind but I am also trying to think of situations where something invading your world isn't scary and I can't really think of any so I guess it is pretty understandable.

Here is one of my favorite songs from the movie! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mQJagD96X8U
