Harry Potter and the Corporate University
One might see the idea of the corporate university and lifelong learning in Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix through one main character: Dolores Umbridge. Her placement at Hogwarts after Harry's incident with Voldemort is done so to make an example of those who rise up against those in power. Her introduction of a theory-only Defense Against the Dark Arts class not only disables the power of the students at Hogwarts, but disarms them for the rest of their lives and takes away their right to be able to fight against what may come (and we all know what does). The Ministry of Magic's presence at Hogwarts mirrors the way that capitalism has seeped into education; with privatized universities and degrees costing a fortune, both the curriculum and the student body are effected. Further, this leads to students only going to school to get a degree to make money, destroying the image of what higher education stands for. In Harry Potter, Hogwarts is one of the most distinguished wizarding educational institutions, and with the corporatization of the school it only takes away from its prestigious name and reputation. Rather than pumping out incredibly skilled wizards, the corporate Hogwarts' goal is create docile "wizards" who never ask questions and would have to spend their lives making up for their lack of education.
While the Harry Potter series is home to many downright evil characters, Umbridge is somehow one of the most hated in the entire series; her fake, pink appearance haunting those who read about her. It might seem silly, but beneath Umbridge's pink facade is all gray; through the corporatization of Hogwarts, her character introduces the fascistic tendencies we see in blooming in our own society. We fear her because we see her in our own lives already.
